The Victorian Government has just tabled its law reform bill. The bill accords women and their partners the right to decide for themselves before 24 weeks of pregnancy, but leaves the doctor to decide, according to a range of confusing criteria, after this time.

The Victorian Law Reform Commission’s report was an impressive document, and the Victorian Government should be congratulated on commissioning it. So, too, do they deserve credit for tackling this difficult political issue. The government’s bill does the right thing by most Victorian women and their partners, giving the more than 99% of whom choose termination before the 24th week the right to decide for themselves. Sadly, however, the bill leaves out a small number of women from the new legal deal, proposing a framework for post-24 weeks that is uncertain, stigmatising and full of red tape.

Take Action! Write a personal email to YOUR MPs. Tell them no women should be left behind. Let them know that while you want them to vote in favour of law reform, you want a law that will benefit all, not just some.
